Peniene prosthesis

Penile prostheses Florence
A penile prosthesis is a medical device that is inserted into the corpora cavernosa of the penis to go to solve various problems related to dysfunction erectile. It is possible to use this treatment following the manifestation of certain diseases, such as, for example, the
Peyronie’s disease
and the
curved penis pathology
, and is effective in cases of individuals suffering from cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and other disorders that lead to penile vessel occlusion. Penile prosthesis surgery Florence is a treatment that solves erectile dysfunction problems in more than 90% of cases. Unfortunately, only one in six people make use of this technique. Although it is a particularly effective treatment, the lack of information and the reticence of many people leads them to be wary of the prosthetic implant.
Every year in Italy, about 3,000 men with erectile dysfunction begin therapies and treatments. However, only 500 resort to penile prosthesis surgery Florence.
Penile prosthesis implantation
- Impotence due to severe cavernous arteriovenous vasculopathy
- In the presence of fibrous degeneration of the corpora cavernosa (induratio penis plastica)
- Severe and multiple vascular risk factors
- When drug treatment with PDE5 inhibitor drugs is not possible
- When patients do not accept or respond to vasoactive PGE1 injections.
- In the case of cardiac patients who use nitroderivatives
Penile prostheses Florence: efficiency and natural appearance
The prostheses in use today give the penis a completely natural appearance, are not visible to the partner(s), and are perfectly disguised by clothing. Once installed and returned to normal sexual activity, the sensations experienced are quite usual, as is the unfolding of intercourse.
A man wearing penile prostheses is not recognizable by/to his partner, either during coitus or in a flaccid state (in the case of hydraulic prostheses). For the insertion of the prosthesis, a very small incision is made at the level of the pubis, or at the level of the scrotal bursa. However, the scar is very small and hardly noticeable, especially a short time after hairs have grown back.
Not only that. Even those who had tried a pharmacological approach to the problem without finding remarkable progress can turn to surgery. The drugs used to treat this condition are usually PDE5 inhibitors, which is administered with intracavernous injections. Those who do not want to undergo it, or those who cannot, can find a viable alternative in the surgical method.
Penile prosthesis surgery is very effective and permanently solves the problem of erectile dysfunction in most cases.
The various types of penile prostheses
- malleable
- hydraulics
Malleable penile prosthesis
They are also called semi-rigid prosthesis, or non-hydraulic prosthesis . This implant consists of two cylinders with semi-rigid silicone cores surrounded by soft silicone. With this type of implant, the penis always remains in a semi-erect position, which is, however, easily disguised.
Silicone cylinders remain in the straight or bent position depending on how you position your penis. When they are bent downward in the resting position, the penis remains facing downward. Instead, the penis acquires a complementary erection that is rigid enough, after appropriate erotic stimulation, to ensure satisfactory intercourse.
Hydraulic penile prosthesis
They are more refined prostheses than the semi-rigid ones. The full name should be: three-component hydraulic penile prosthesis, because it consists of three different elements:
- Reservoir pre-filled with saline solution
- two inflatable cylinders
- micro pump and button for activation/deactivation
How do penile prostheses work Florence
Inflatable penis implants are filled on demand with a special liquid, contained in the special reservoir. The cylinders, which are placed inside the corpora cavernosa of the penis, inflate with fluid when the pump is depressed and draws the fluid from the reservoir, thus making the penis stand up.
The device deflates when the pump is squeezed several times, allowing the liquid to flow back into the holding tank. These prostheses, being “floppy” make the penis maintain its natural resting appearance. Once sexual intercourse is over, to return the prostheses, and consequently the penis, to its resting condition, the mechanism is activated in reverse by touching a button inserted into the scortal pump.
Very natural and satisfactory results are achieved with this type of implant.
How a hydraulic penile prosthesis implant is performed
The surgery is usually performed under general, or spinal, anesthesia. A catheter is then placed on the patient, which is usually removed the day after surgery. Once the patient is sedated, the surgeon will make a circular incision at pubic height, just above the penis, or between the penis and scrotum. The cut will be deep enough to allow the corpora cavernosa of the penis to be seen.
At that point the two cylinders are inserted, while the reservoir is placed behind the abdominal wall and the pump in the scrotum, between the testicles (so that it remains well hidden).
Once all the elements are placed, they are connected to each other. At that point the surgeon can suture the incision. The wound is cleaned and a compression bandage is applied. If all went well, the patient is discharged the day after surgery. The bandage is removed and the implant is deflated.
At this point there may be some pain, completely normal, irritation and swelling of the penis and scrotum. Discomfort and soreness that could last several days, or weeks thereafter.
In the 2 to 3 days immediately following the surgery, some small leakage may occur due to the incision, but this does not need any intervention because it heals independently.
Recovery time
- do not lift weights
- do not exercise
- avoid riding a bicycle
- avoid thermal baths
- avoid saunas

Dr. Andrea Cocci
urologist and andrologist
The choice to devote my professional life to urology and in particular to andrologic and reconstructive surgery is the result of a deep passion for anatomy, the art of surgery and in general the diagnostic therapeutic process leading to patient recovery. Oncological pathology, infertility, erectile dysfunction, penile disease, or simply prostate disorders irretrievably afflict not only the individual but also the couple dimension.
