Erectile dysfunction
Erectile dysfunction
Erection problems can affect men at any age and depend on organic causes of various hormonal, vascular and neurogenic nature. Correct diagnosis is the basis for therapy which, in addition to drugs, uses specific shock waves for the regeneration of vascular tissue. In severe cases, the latest generation prostheses guarantee excellent functional and aesthetic results.
Epidemiology
Erectile dysfunction is the recurrent and persistent inability to have a strong erection sufficient for sexual intercourse. Considering the mild forms, it is estimated that 50% of men suffer from this condition, an incidence that increases over the years.
Causes
Although the causes are age dependent, we divide them into 4 large macro-categories:
- Vascular causes (arteriogenic or venogenic)
- Neurological causes
- Hormonal causes
- Psychological causes
In some cases more than one cause coexists.
Diagnosis
The correct diagnosis of erectile dysfunction passes from an exclusion of possible risk factors related to the use of drugs, inflammatory and/or infectious diseases, taking medicines or an incorrect lifestyle.
Subsequently, hormonal causes will be excluded through the hormonal blood dosage and the penile vascular study through the penile and dynamic ecocolor Doppler.

Treatments for erectile dysfunction
Treatment is based on the degree of erectile dysfunction reported and the cause of the erectile dysfunction itself.
If in the past it was plausible to correct the symptom only thanks to the use of pills or in extreme cases to the implant of a penile prosthesis, today we can also evaluate in some cases the cure of the symptom through the use of external stimulation through shock waves (Shock wave therapy or ESWT) which allows vascular regeneration.
