Penile cancer surgery
Penile cancer is a rare disease characterized by the presence of cancer cells on the skin or even in the internal tissues that make up the penis.
Surgery is the most common treatment for all stages of penile cancer. The surgeon may decide to remove the tumor by implementing one of the following types of intervention, based on the extent of the tumor:
– Wide local excision: consists of the sole removal of the tumor with a wide margin of surrounding healthy tissue;
– Circumcision: it is the removal of the foreskin;
– Penectomy: is the removal of the penis. It is the most common and most effective treatment for penile cancer. It can be partial if only part of the penis is removed, or total if the surgeon removes the entire penis. In some cases it also includes the dissection of the inguinal lymph nodes;
– Microsurgery: allows the tumor to be removed by reducing the margin of healthy tissue removed as much as possible. The use of a microscope allows the surgeon to be sure that all tumor cells are removed;
– Laser surgery: consists in the use of an intense beam of light to hit and destroy tumor cells;
– Cryosurgery (or cryotherapy): consists of the use of an instrument that freezes tumor cells, causing them to die thanks to the cold.
