Circumcision for phimosis
The aim of the operation is the removal of the foreskin, which can be achieved through various techniques and using different tools. Typically at the end of the procedure some stitches made of an absorbable material are placed, therefore these stitches will disappear by themselves.
Based on the preoperative evaluations, it will be possible to choose between local, loco-regional or general anesthesia. Regardless of the type, anesthesia prevents any kind of pain sensation during the operation, while for the discomfort of the following days, light painkillers are generally administered.
Generally it takes about ten days for the penis to heal from the surgery (and sometimes up to a few weeks to overcome a more or less severe form of hypersensitivity to the now discovered mucosa).
From an aesthetic point of view, the penis will take on its final appearance approximately six weeks after the operation.
It will be advisable to abstain from sexual intercourse and any form of stimulation (masturbation) for at least four weeks after the operation (although spontaneous erections are possible, which should be avoided as far as possible).
It is advisable to contact your Urologist in case of fever, increasing redness, bleeding, persistent or throbbing pain in the penis, painful or annoying urine passage.
Complications
Complications after medically motivated circumcisions are rare and, in most cases, no significant problems are reported. Beyond the initial swelling, bleeding and infection are the two most common problems associated with circumcision.
Other possible complications are:
• permanent reduction of sensitivity of the glans, especially during sexual manipulations around the scar, • need to remove stitches that have not reabsorbed, • occasionally, the need for a second operation to remove more skin from the glans.
