Sling Advance placement for male incontinence
Sling Advance placement for male incontinence
Urinary incontinence, or the involuntary loss of urine, is a problem that affects about 2% of patients who undergo surgery on the prostate. Urinary incontinence is usually characterized on the basis of its severity and, consequently, in light of the impairment of the patient’s quality of life. It starts from the definition of a mild incontinence, up to a severe urinary incontinence.
However, it seriously affects the quality of life of patients in various areas: social, psychological, professional, domestic, physical, sexual, but it can be treated effectively thanks to surgery.
The “AdVance®” device represents an innovative tool in the treatment of urinary incontinence and, as such, has been the subject of numerous studies conducted in some important centres. From the first results reported in the literature, “AdVance®” allows the complete recovery of continence in most cases starting from the immediate post-operative course; the remaining cases however report a significant improvement in urinary continence, with a consequent improvement in the global quality of life.
The alternative treatment, represented by the chronic and daily use of external aids (diapers, collection systems, condoms) certainly does not guarantee a good quality of life.
Indications for positioning AdVance®: Mild or moderate urinary incontinence (urinary losses less than <300 ml/day or between 1 and 5 devices used daily), due to a functional deficit of the sphincter muscle of the urethra.
The positioning of the Advance device involves a series of clinical and instrumental checks, to be performed before hospitalization, including blood tests, urine test with urine culture, PAD test/wet diaper weight, urethrocystoscopy, complete urodynamic exam and possible ultrasound of the urinary tract and retrograde and voiding cystourethrography.
